This Ain't Your Momma's Relief Society President!

Our Relief Society President ROCKS! Actually, she ROLLS, too! She is a petite Harley Ridin' Momma and it cracks me up! Who says women in the church have to be prim and proper?

I hear rumors that our Primary President loves a good ride on her husband's Harley, too. Now, if the Bishop could just convince HIS wife that he needs a bike (um, over somebody's dead body and it won't be mine), all those nasty parking problems at our church building would be alleviated (he's a giver...).

She's got a pretty important career and shows up professionally dressed to RS on Sundays. But on Saturdays, she's all about leather and doo-rags.

It's like some {not so} secret life. Ride on, Sister P!!!!

Actually, her husband (and my photo partner in crime) sent me an article yesterday about Harley Ridin' Mormons who rumble up to the temple on their bikes: LINK. I asked him if they were going to join the gang, but he said his rebel days are behind him. :-)

Seems to be a trend in the LDS circles I think. We've got about 4 or 5 guys in the ward here that have bikes too. Mid-life crisis thing maybe?

Rob just looked at me and I put up the hand and said "Don't even ask!!" :D

The further discourage Rob... A lady in our ward got in a head-on freeway collision a couple of weeks ago (and lived - what a miracle) and her roommate at Harborview was a woman who had wanted a motorcycle her WHOLE LIFE. She finally got one on her 50th birthday and on her VERY FIRST ride, crashed it and lost her arm.

You need all the horror stories you can get. :-)

You a funny lady, K.......nice article.

But as a former State Trooper, I can tell you a TON of horror stories all involving automobiles....and yes, a few involving motorcycles. But most of us refuse to live with our heads buried in the sand - live fast, die young, and have a good looking corpse used to be my motto - but it is now to late for that! ;-)

In a world of virtual experiences, instant gratification, point-and-click interfaces, and automatic transmissions, riding is an anachronism. It gives us the pleasures of having to be awake and aware in our activities.

Riding is simply a lot of fun. It is a joy to shift gears onto an open road, lean into twisty corners. It is a sensory delight to ride to the top of a hill and then scoot down it again. It is pleasurable to flick gears, tap the throttle, twitch a knee and have the bike obey like a trained quarter horse. It’s variously exciting, relaxing, enlightening and ennobling to ride.

Riding is about passion, about making the adrenaline flow, about pleasure, about awakened and heightened sensation. Driving is about - well, driving. It’s about getting from here to there in the least time with the least inconvenience. It’s about idling in bumper-to-bumper commuter jams, engine overheating, tempers flaring, kids screaming. Driving has all the passion of watching paint dry.

If you don’t understand, you probably never will. Sit in your mini-van and try to tell me that your heart beats a little faster when you turn the engine on. Pull into a mall parking lot full of so many mini-vans and urban-warrior-SUVS that you worry about recognizing your own vehicle - and try to tell me you felt a thrill about coming together with them all. Drive through the countryside with your windows rolled up, air conditioning on and music cranked up and try to express the experience of motion through the fresh air that smelled of new hay and cows.

If you've never ridden, you can't comprehend. But once you try it, you're hooked for life.

Jeannine, you're an inspiration!
